2. Keep heat-producing appliances away from your thermostat.

3. Program your thermostat.

4. Reschedule laundry and cooking.
Home appliances such as your clothes dryer, oven and stove generate a significant amount of heat. Prolong the life of your cooling system by scheduling laundry and cooking at night to avoid generating extra heat indoors, which must be converted into cool air.
5. Close the drapes.
In the summer, close the draperies on your south-facing windows in the daytime and open them in the evening. This keeps the warming sunlight out of your home during the day.
6. Get a seasonal system check-up.
